Sandbar Santa Barbara: Coastal Design, Reimagined
A longtime fixture on Santa Barbara’s State Street, Sandbar Cocina y Tequila has entered a new chapter following an extensive seven-month transformation.
Reimagined by VANROOY Design, the restaurant draws inspiration from Mexico’s Riviera Maya and Caribbean coastline, bringing natural textures, warm materials and a relaxed coastal sensibility to the heart of downtown Santa Barbara. Expanded indoor-outdoor spaces and a retractable roof create an open, adaptable setting designed to move effortlessly from daytime dining into evenings spent gathering over food and drinks.
Harbour furnishings were selected throughout the space to complement this vision, bringing considered form, texture and lasting performance to the restaurant’s new design.
DESIGNED FOR GATHERING
Throughout the dining areas, the MLB Teak Armless Dining Chair brings together natural Indonesian teak and a streamlined sling profile. Created in collaboration with interior designer Martyn Lawrence Bullard, the design takes cues from classic indoor sling chairs while translating the silhouette for contemporary hospitality spaces.
The warmth of natural teak complements Sandbar’s organic material palette, while the chair’s clean proportions create a relaxed dining setting that feels considered without being overly formal.
OUT ON THE PATIO
Sandbar’s outdoor patio extends the restaurant’s relaxed coastal atmosphere into the open air, with the Milan 2 Seat Sofa creating a comfortable place to settle in and stay awhile.
Inspired by the design legacy of its namesake city, Milan pairs a solid aluminum plinth base with twisted rope detailing, sculpted curves and generous all-weather cushions. Finished in Bronze with Twisted Rope Dune and Siesta Taupe upholstery, its warm, neutral palette feels naturally at home against the textures and tones of the newly designed patio.
The result is an outdoor setting that balances the energy of State Street with the laid-back character of coastal Santa Barbara.

Together, the furniture selections reflect the broader approach to Sandbar’s transformation: natural materials, contemporary silhouettes and spaces designed around how people gather.
From teak dining chairs to generous lounge seating on the outdoor patio, each piece contributes to a layered design language that moves naturally between dining and lounging, indoors and out.
The result is a fresh expression of coastal hospitality on State Street, one that feels relaxed, inviting and distinctly suited to Santa Barbara.
